- The town of Lucca was voted one of the BEST PLACES TO LIVE by Forbes Magazine. It is small and not too touristy and it makes a perfect home base to visit much of Tuscany because of its location: its close to the coast and to the mountains and national parks, and also close to a major road that reaches Pisa in half an hour. From nearby Viareggio in Versilia, you can take a boat trip to the Cinque Terre, take sailing lessons, or just lie on the beach. In the winter you can ski at Abetone.
- Siena is about 50 minutes away and from there another 10 minutes leisurely drive to San Gimignano.
- Lucca has charming cobbled streets lined with delicatessens selling fresh bread, cakes and fresh pasta, marinated olives etc.
- It is possible to eat well for under Eur 15 per head at many good restaurants. The area is known for many foods especially tortelli lucchese, farro and roasted meat. Lucca is famous for its olive oil -amongst the best and healthiest in the world. There are lots of good bars, and everywhere you go you will find a gelateria (selling freshly made ice cream).
- Its perfect for bike riding. All local Lucchesi ride bikes even the older members. As its at sea level the whole town is quite flat, and also there are few cars allowed inside the walls. Riding or jogging or even just walking along the walls gives you a sense of the history of Lucca when the walls protected its citizens from outside marauders.
- You can see evidence of its medieval past with the different layers of history in its architecture and especially in its city planning. Lucca has Roman origins and the most famous piazza of Lucca is the piazza dellampiteatro which is the only oval shaped piazza in all of Italy and it is configured as such thanks to the footprint of the Roman ampitheatre that is preserved with the construction of the medieval homes on the piazza.
- There are many art and music festivals on around Lucca. The most famous are the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago (a pleasant 20 minute drive) as well as the Lucca Summer Music Festival with past names such as Elton John, Jamiroquai and James Blunt and Stevie Wonder rumoured to be starring next year. There are many garden fairs such as Murabilia and Verde Mura where you can buy plants and garden furniture. In the summer is the famous La Versiliana Arts Festival in nearby Marina Pietrasanta as well as the now internationally known Lucca Comics and Games in October. So definitely something to suit all tastes !
